About Harmoni Designs + Build

Award Winning Cleveland Architects & Design-Builders

Harmoni Designs + Build. It’s a simple concept, really. Harmoni is the Danish word for harmony. And harmony is exactly what we strive for when designing spaces for our clients to live and work in. Harmony at home, at work and at play. Harmony with self, with community and with the planet.

Why Danish, you might ask? Martin Johannessen, president & founder of Harmoni Designs + Build, was born, raised and received his initial professional training in Denmark. He earned his Constructing Architect degree there before becoming a registered NCARB Certified Architect in the U.S.

Whether it’s a new home or an existing structure needing a re-design, we create inviting spaces that put you and your family in a harmonious environment that compliments your lifestyle – all while maintaining a respectful awareness of the surrounding natural space. We strive for sustainable, eco-friendly building options that are healthier for us all in the long term. Being green is not simply about energy savings; it’s about having a healthy place to live & work, to harness your own potential creativity and productivity!

A master carpenter, Martin’s training in old world styles and techniques produces cabinetry and woodwork that is built to last – a trait many of us envy about our parents’ generations of quality products. We use natural materials, much of it hard woods, that create a sense of quality, durability and a design sensibility that speaks to our desire for beauty from natural elements. We’ll choose walnut or beech over particle-board any day, thank you.

Harmoni Designs + Build provides a diverse range of architectural, interior design, general contracting, design-build & construction management services, for both residential & commercial projects. Whether you simply need professional help with design or are looking for an experienced true design-build partner that can work closely with you from concept all the way through completion of construction, we are here to help.

Even though Harmoni Designs + Build will work closely with you to create a unique design, whether traditional, transitional or modern, that clearly defines you, it’s no secret that Martin’s defining signature style is Danish Contemporary. To be clear, this is not the look of your grandparents’ 1970’s wood-paneled rec room. The style traces its inspiration from the organic architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright’s early prairie houses as well as influences from Japanese architecture – both channeling the fluidity of nature between the interior and exterior of everyday spaces.

Danish Contemporary design blends natural light and dark woods to create dramatic, breath-taking internal spaces. The designs often allow for natural light and enhance the beauty of natural surroundings to bring a peaceful, calming environment to living & working spaces.

Client Testimonials

“My husband and I recently purchased a summer cottage in Vermilion, OH. 2 garages are also on the property. Harmony Designs helped us integrate one of the garages into more living space for summer guests. Martin Johannessen listened to our ideas and incorporated his knowledge and artistic vision into a plan that is both aesthetically pleasing AND functional. Along with the new plan of the existing garage we also worked together to create a pathway design that connects both the existing house and the new/old garage space. Most of all my husband and I were impressed with how Martin listened and was able to incorporate and embellish our ideas. We are looking forward to the upcoming building of our project.”

Linda Miller

Working with Martin at Harmoni Designs + Build was the best contractor experience we’ve ever had. From the beginning, Martin was very transparent and clear with setting expectations for how the project would run. He was incredibly flexible with us as we finalized our design and then later identified some additional changes. He offered great design insights as we were choosing tile and other features of the remodel. He was very communicative and I was always updated with the status of the project. The finished remodel exceeded our expectations. Really a great experience.

Martin and his team at Harmoni Build were really helpful guiding us thru a large kitchen remodel. Martin was always available to us to answer questions. We had a clear understanding of the cost and process the entire time. His team was professional and personable. I highly recommend working with Harmoni Build.
